OUR SERVICES

The transition from childhood to adulthood is a time that can create different emotions and conflicts within a family.  Child/ Adolescent therapy can help parents and teens effectively navigate this exciting and tumultuous stage in the life cycle of the family.

Adult and Couples Therapy can help people explore issues in order to become more conscious in their interactions and choices, improve communication, navigate life more effectively, and find balance in their lives and relationships.

Assessments are conducted at the start of treatment and identify the person's needs, concerns, strengths, and allows the individual and family to make informed decisions about treatment. The assessment helps determine how treatment services and support can assist a person in reaching their desired goals.

Shama Winston-Ford received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Master of Science in Clinical Counseling from Charleston Southern University in Charleston, SC . Shama works with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, disruptive behaviors, relationship challenges, self-esteem, and trauma. She has received trainings in TF-CBT, EMDR and Play Therapy. Over the past three years, she has taught Emotional Regulation classes and Social Emotional classes at Horizons summer camp (hosted at Ashley Hall school) which is for young women who attend under resourced schools in the tri-county. Through this experience she has come to realize the need for open communication when it comes to understanding the why behind feelings. Authenticity and transparency are important to her; she considers herself a TLE (therapist with lived experience). She has an eclectic approach that includes mindfulness, psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral techniques with an eye toward how people can use their support system, community resources, mindfulness and newly learned skills to live the kind of life they envision for themselves while keeping careful consideration of cultural concerns and practices. She believes that each person has their own story that has shaped what they are currently experiencing. Through her work as a therapist, she strives to foster a safe space where clients can tell their story, gain insight into how that has impacted them, and create a new reality that is more fulfilling. She meets her clients and their families where they are at therapeutically and provides a safe and accepting environment to help each individual feel secure throughout the process. She believes in utilizing multiple supports while exploring executive functioning strengths and weaknesses and how they impact my client’s life.

Keyayanna believes that cognitive awareness allows us to understand and navigate the world, while mindfulness reminds us to connect with ourselves, free from interpretation and judgment, and challenges us to "just be." Keyayanna has experience working with a wide range of clients from various backgrounds and ages. She works best with clients wanting help with stress management, relationship issues, goal attainment, motivation, emotional regulation, and self-esteem. She specializes in helping adults reconnect with and challenge themselves using cognitive and mindfulness modalities. Her experience as a flight attendant developed a special interest in the mental health needs of pilots and flight attendants. This first-hand experience has provided her insight and knowledge to assist flight crew members and other aviation professionals in navigating the challenges presented in the aviation industry.

SUCCESS STORIES

“IMy husband and I were struggling in our marriage, and I was about to file for divorce. Someone referred us to Barber Therapy & Associates and we started going weekly and the environment was so warm and welcoming from the first visit until now. We have been going for 6 months and there has been a tremendous improvement in our communication and I no longer plan to divorce.”

M. Sampson

"My child was totally out of control, not able to remain in school without suspensions, poor grades, and I didn't know what to do.  We started seeing Mrs. Barber and things quickly turned around for us.  Mrs. Barber even stays in contact with my child's doctor and her teacher,  My daughter loves to go to therapy.  She actually reminds me of her appointments when I forget."

Brenda P.

"My 13 year old daughter was very depressed (cutting herself and acting out in school).  She's been in therarpy consistently for the past two years and she is no longer cutting, her mood is brighter, and behavior has improved in school.  She enjoys her weekly therapy time and looks forward to her sessions.  My husband and I also like the swift responses we get from the therapist when we have a crisis."

Allison C.

“Iam a 23 year old single mom who was dealing with post partum depression. My issues actually started when I got pregnant, and I was referred to Barber Therapy by my gynecologist. The therapy has been awesome for me. I continue to go every week and have realized that my depression stems from some issues in my past that I discovered through therapy. I would reccommend Barber Therapy & Associates to anyone. It's a great place for help”

Janice B.

"I lost my husband suddenly 18 months ago and was unable to focus or concentrate at work, was extremely depressed and angry, and didn't think I would ever make it through. I started seeing Mrs. Barber, and slowly but surely, my mood began to brighten at just the thought of my appointments with her. The skills she taught me to cope were extremely helpful in my ongoing recovery. Although I continue to grieve, she has taught me that it's ok and has taught me skills to move on with my daily functioning in spite of my grief. I'm also back at work and doing much better there."

"I have been suffering from anxiety and depression for over 7 years. I have been on many medicatiosn and seen many doctors. But, I have been seeing Mrs. Barber for only 3 months and I am now able to go to the grocery store with out having a panic attack. And although I still have anxiety while driving , the coping skills she has taught me help me to make it to my destination without having to stop several times along the way."
